Instructional Assistant – Special Education
Hourly Rate: $17.16
Employment Type: Full-Time, 9-Month Position
Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED and meet one of the following requirements:
- Completion of 60 post secondary credit hours from an accredited institution, or
- An Associate’s degree, or
- A passing score on the ParaPro Assessment (https://www.ets.org/parapro)
Position Summary:
The Instructional Assistant – Special Education provides essential support to the instructional program by assisting in the supervision, care, and education of students with special needs. This role involves working in regular and self-contained classrooms, implementing individualized learning plans, and ensuring a safe, positive environment for students.
Key Responsibilities:
Instructional & Student Support:
- Assist in delivering instruction by adapting classroom activities and materials under the teacher’s direction.
- Provide one-on-one or small-group support to reinforce lesson objectives.
- Administer and assist with tests, assignments, and make-up work.
Specialized Student Care:
- Support students with medical, physical, and developmental needs, including assistance with lifting, feeding, toileting, diapering, medication administration, and mobility devices.
- Implement behavioral intervention strategies as directed by the IEP team.
- Assist in de-escalating conflicts using appropriate therapeutic and intervention techniques.
Classroom & Administrative Assistance:
- Monitor and supervise students during classroom activities, recess, hallways, bus loading zones, and other non-instructional periods to maintain safety.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records, including behavioral logs and instructional materials.
- Perform basic clerical duties such as copying, filing, and data entry to support teachers.
Communication & Professional Development:
- Communicate effectively with teachers, support staff, parents, and administrators to track student progress and ensure alignment with educational goals.
- Attend meetings, training sessions, and workshops, including CPR, First Aid, and emergency response training.
Qualifications & Skills:
Required Skills:
- Ability to support students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and office equipment.
Knowledge of:
- Instructional strategies, child development, and behavior management techniques.
- Safety protocols and special education practices.
Abilities:
- Adapt to changing priorities and classroom needs.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when working with students and families.
Additional Requirements:
- CPR and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card and Criminal Background Check required.
Work Environment:
This role involves frequent sitting, walking, standing, lifting, and assisting students with mobility and personal care needs. Work is performed in a school setting, which may include exposure to outdoor elements and occasional physical intervention scenarios.
