Position Title: Veterinary Medical Officer (Assistant State Veterinarian)
Position Overview:
This role supports the State Veterinarian by conducting fieldwork and enhancing the Animal Health and Welfare Program. It also shares subject matter expert (SME) duties with another field Assistant State Veterinarian across multiple species and program areas.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead field investigations and serve as SME for:
-
Bovine Programs (e.g., TB, Brucellosis, Trichomoniasis)
-
Swine Programs (e.g., Pseudorabies, PEDv, PRRS)
-
Poultry Programs (e.g., NPIP, Avian Influenza)
-
Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) Investigations
-

Cross-train in other critical areas: equine, aquaculture, rabies/public health, animal welfare, disease traceability, federal grants, and illegal livestock entry coordination.

Coordinate and serve as liaison for the Arizona Livestock Incident Response Team.

Supervise one administrative staff member.

Support outreach and training with agencies, counties, tribes, and youth groups (e.g., FFA, 4-H).

Assist with emergency preparedness and inspections (livestock, meat, poultry, dairy, eggs).
Requirements:
-
DVM or VMD degree with Arizona veterinary licensure (or eligibility).
-
Knowledge of state/federal animal health laws, USDA regulations, ZFAD, and NAI.

Skilled in communication, field investigations, and livestock/poultry handling.

Ability to prioritize, multitask, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

Must maintain confidentiality and drive a state vehicle for field duties.
